Love in Buckets Full

I lie in darkness, floating somewhere
not between these sheets
their faces flying past me 
their hands reaching out
which I fail to grasp
short bursts of air sear my skin
 
buildings behind them
explode into a million flying meteors
orange and white hot
through screams
high pitched children’s squeals 
like hosed water
shoot through my ears
resonating and lodging 
at the back of my throat
trapped in there
it is hard to breathe 
while honouring their suffering
allowing their cries to be with me
to acknowledge their pain

this staggering inhumanity 
has rattled all the cages I live in
unmasked the sycophants 
that are silent 
put merciless western leaders 
in plain sight
as they carve their names 
and their success 
on the backs of dead
mutilated and starved people
I close my eyes and wrap around you
hold your hand 
feel your warm familiar shape 
gentle as you squeeze my palm

this inherent gesture 
is the only thread 
connecting me to earth right now
I hold you 
as you shift position 
in small jerky motions
I wonder what you dream 
how much longer 
you will recognise me 
your memory failing you
this love so tangible
full in its capacity for peace
out there is beyond 
all comprehension

those in tents in Gaza 
have love in buckets full 
as they hold each other tight
as they wrap their dead
clutch dead flowers 
as no one rises to help them
